Intelligent Grinding Wheels and Dark Matter

Do you know this situation? You attend a conference looking forward to an exciting presentation, perhaps on “Machining demanding materials in the aerospace industry”, and then you are gently lulled into half‑sleep by 300 PowerPoint slides.

Intelligent Grinding Wheels

At Haas Schleifmaschinen, we regularly ask ourselves how to make our presentations engaging and accessible. Especially when dealing with complex topics such as intelligent grinding wheels. And no, this is not a joke.

Our colleague Wolfram Hermle has implemented a software‑based solution for back grinding small hobs using intelligent, large grinding wheels. The result is impressive: the entire grinding cycle is completed in a single setup and takes around 50 percent less time. If I could draw as well as Jorge Cham, I would probably turn this topic into a grinding comic.

And if you would like to know how to teach a grinding wheel to think, Wolfram Hermle is the person to ask.

Dark Matter

Jorge Cham, the creator of PhD Comics, demonstrates in a wonderfully clear way how complex subjects can be visualised in an entertaining manner. This brilliant illustrator and PhD engineer has captured a casual conversation between two physics professors. The topic is dark matter and how researchers at CERN deal with this mysterious phenomenon.

A great example of how even highly complex content can be communicated in an engaging and understandable way. And without the need for 300 PowerPoint slides.
