Coolants and lubricants in grinding technology

  • Coolants and lubricants in grinding technology

In grinding, coolants and lubricants perform several key functions: they cool the process zone, reduce friction, and support the removal of chips and abrasive particles. As a result, they play a crucial role in process stability, tool life, and component quality.

Depending on the application, different types are used—ranging from non-water-miscible oils to water-based emulsions or solutions. Their respective properties can be specifically tailored using additives, allowing the coolant/lubricant to be adapted to the material, the process, and the desired surface quality.

The correct selection is therefore always application-specific and has a significant influence on the material removal rate, temperature behavior, and the grinding result.
